Janet Bullard founded Proactive Health Care Advisors (PHCA) in 2008 in response to the growing needs of an aging population that is living much longer but experiencing chronic illness and associated quality of life issues. PHCA helps individuals and families navigate the complexities of health care planning, medical crises and decision-making for their loved ones.

Janet brings over 25 years of Nursing in the community, hospice and hospital to her passion of working with families to solve problems and optimize outcomes. Her ability to effectively manage and problem-solve crises, along with her belief that being proactive leads to more choices and control over important decisions, allows her to successfully develop creative and timely solutions that address client and family needs, within budget and physical constraints. Strong analytical and interpersonal skills, a passion for learning, and the ability and desire to create long-standing relationships are all key components of Janet’s success.

Janet trained in nursing at the University of Calgary, graduating in 1982 with her RN and BN. She began her nursing career with VON (Victorian Order of Nurses) and helped establish the Calgary Homecare Palliative Program in 1985. After 3 years in Neonatal ICU, Janet returned to Homecare and was active in pediatric community care, as well as the seniors and Palliative Care programs. As the unmet needs of non-cancer patients became obvious, Janet returned to U of C to earn her Graduate Nursing Degree with a focus on Chronic illness and Palliative Care. Janet worked as a Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) providing Palliative Care consultation in the Calgary Health Region acute care hospitals. Dedicated to both expanding and sharing her extensive experience and knowledge, Janet spent 4 years establishing the Palliative Care Program for the Southern Alberta Renal Program. During this time she sat on the Advisory Committee for The Care at the End of Life under the Seniors and Palliative Care Portfolio, Calgary Health Region, and was involved in the development of the ‘My Voice’ Advanced Care Planning program.

Janet is an Associate Professor in the Nursing Faculty at the University of Calgary. She has earned the National Certification of Canadian Hospice Palliative Care Nurse – CHPCN (c), is a Member of CARNA {College and Association of Registered Nurses of Alberta}, and is also a Member of CNA {Canadian Nurses Association}. Janet is also a CSA (Certified Seniors Advisor) with the Canadian Academy of Senior Advisors, professionals who understand and serve our senior population.
